How do I know if my chimney needs lining rather than repointing?

Damp or tar staining on the chimney breast inside, a smell from the fireplace, or smoke coming back into the room usually points at the flue. Crumbling joints, loose bricks and damp at the ceiling line around the stack point at the external brickwork. Often it is both, and a survey will tell you which is driving the problem.
