"Nick repointed the front & side walls of our 1930s semi in October 2024. Nick took great care preparing the walls, raking out all the old mortar which was heavily weathered and crumbling in places, replacing several cracked bricks and removing some previous work which had been patched with cement. Everything was washed down and left clean and tidy. The job was completed on time & to budget. We are delighted with the result."
Case study
The brief
The owners of this 1930s Tudor-style semi in Hampton came to us with heavily weathered mortar across the front and side elevations. Joints were crumbling and washing out in places, several bricks had cracked, and previous patch repairs had been made in hard cement which was trapping moisture in the wall.
The work we carried out
- Scaffolded the front and side elevations for safe, consistent access to the bay, porch and first floor windows.
- Raked out all the old weathered mortar by hand to a proper depth, taking care not to damage the brick arrises.
- Removed the previous cement patch repairs so the whole elevation could be repointed in one consistent, breathable mortar.
- Cut out and replaced the cracked and spalled bricks, matching the original red stock for colour and texture.
- Repointed the full elevation in a mortar mix matched to the original, finished to suit the character of the house.
- Washed the brickwork down and left the site clean and tidy on completion.
The result
The facade was completed on time and on budget, with the new pointing reading as original rather than as a repair. The elevation is now weathertight and protected for decades, and the Tudor detailing around the bay and porch reads crisply again.
